When to buy a stroller: the sales calendar nobody tells you about

If you've been waiting for that UPPAbaby or Nuna to "go on sale sometime," here's the uncomfortable truth: premium stroller brands enforce minimum advertised pricing (MAP), which means every retailer — big-box, boutique, and online — shows the same price almost all year. No store is allowed to undercut. The good news: the exceptions are few and predictable, so you can plan around them.

The real discount windows

Black Friday / Cyber Monday — the big one
This is when the premium brands run their main (for some, only) sitewide sales of the year. Nuna and UPPAbaby both typically participate, usually in the 15–25% off range on select models and colors, and authorized dealers are allowed to match. If you're due in spring and can wait until late November to buy, wait. This is the single best answer to "when should I buy."
Amazon Prime Day (July, and the fall rerun)
Mostly moves mass-market brandsChicco, Graco, and similar routinely drop 20–30%. Premium brands mostly sit it out or discount only accessories. Good window if your budget is in the $150–400 range.
Memorial Day / Labor Day
Retailer-level baby sales rather than brand sales — department stores and baby-gear chains discount whatever they're allowed to, which usually means mid-range brands, older stock, and accessories. Worth a look, not worth planning a pregnancy around.
End-of-model-year clearance — the insider window
When a brand ships new colorways or a redesigned frame (often announced in spring or early fall), last year's colors become clearance stock even though the stroller is functionally identical. Discounts of 20–30% with full manufacturer warranty are normal. These deals frequently never make it online — they clear out on shop floors.

The floor-model question (just ask)

Every stroller shop has display models that get test-folded a hundred times, and eventually they get sold. Walk in and ask two questions: "Do you have any floor models you're selling?" and "Any last-year colorways in back?" A floor-model Vista at 25% off with warranty intact is one of the best deals in baby gear, and it only goes to people who ask. This works far better at independent shops than chains — the owner can make that call on the spot. Find a local shop and try it.

Registry completion discounts

If you're expecting, this one's nearly free money: the big registry retailers (Amazon, Target, and the baby-gear chains) offer a one-time 10–15% "completion discount" on remaining registry items in the weeks around your due date. The move: put the stroller on the registry, let friends and family buy the smaller stuff, then buy the stroller yourself with the completion discount. Even MAP-protected brands are usually eligible, because the discount comes from the retailer program, not an advertised price cut.

Local boutiques match more than you think

People assume the local shop is the expensive option, then discover the price is identical to online — because MAP makes it identical. What the boutique adds at the same price: assembly, a real test-drive (see our choosing guide for what to test), car-seat compatibility answers, and someone to call when a wheel squeaks. Many will also match a legitimate authorized-dealer sale price during the Black Friday window if you ask — they'd rather match than lose the sale. What they can't match is a too-good-to-be-true price from an unauthorized seller, and neither should you: no authorized dealer means no manufacturer warranty on most premium brands.

If you can't wait for a sale

Two honest alternatives. First, buy used: premium strollers hold up so well that a clean one-owner Vista at 50% of retail is often a smarter buy than a new mid-range stroller at the same price — our used stroller guide covers what to check, and these shops sell used stock. Second, buy the outgoing generation new when a redesign is announced — same warranty, big discount, and the "old" model was last month's flagship.
