How to choose a stroller (start with your sidewalk, not the stroller)
Most people shop for a stroller backwards: they start with a brand they saw at the park, then try to justify the price. The right order is the reverse — figure out where the stroller will actually live and roll, then let that eliminate 80% of the market for you. A stroller that's perfect in a Brooklyn walk-up is miserable in a Texas suburb, and vice versa.
Step one: describe your actual life
- City sidewalks and transit: you need a tight fold, a light frame you can carry up stairs one-handed, and wheels that shrug off curb cuts and broken pavement. Trunk space doesn't matter; elevator and doorway width do.
- Suburbs and car-first errands: the fold and trunk fit are everything, because the stroller lives in the car. You'll fold and unfold it six times a day — a fussy two-hand fold gets old by week two.
- Trails, gravel, serious daily miles: air-filled or foam-filled large wheels and real suspension. Small plastic wheels rattle a sleeping baby awake on anything rougher than a mall floor.
The four archetypes (and honest price anchors)
- Full-size — e.g. UPPAbaby Vista, around $1,000
- Big basket, plush ride, bassinet included, expandable to a double. The family SUV of strollers. Heavy (25+ lbs) and a bulky fold — brilliant if it's your primary "vehicle" on foot, overkill if it mostly rides in a trunk.
- Mid-size / compact full-featured — e.g. UPPAbaby Cruz, around $700
- Most of the full-size comfort in a lighter, narrower frame. The right default for most one-kid families who walk a real amount but also drive.
- Travel / ultra-compact — e.g. BABYZEN YOYO, around $500

- Three air-filled wheels, a fixed or lockable front wheel, and hand brake. If you actually run, nothing else works. If you don't run, you're paying in weight and turning radius for a feature you'll never use.
The newborn question
Most strollers' standard seats aren't suitable until around 6 months, when a baby can sit with support. For the newborn phase you need one of two things:
- A bassinet — included with some full-size models (the Vista), a $200–300 add-on for others. Flat, ventilated, and what many parents use for daytime naps too.
- Infant car seat compatibility — the seat clicks onto the stroller frame. Here's the catch almost everyone learns the hard way: most car seats need brand-pair-specific adapters, sold separately for $30–60. A Nuna Pipa fits an UPPAbaby frame only with the right adapter. Confirm the exact pairing before you buy either piece.
The test-drive checklist
This is the strongest argument for visiting a local shop instead of ordering blind. Bring these five tests:
- The one-hand fold. Hold something in your other arm (a diaper bag works as a stand-in for the baby) and fold the stroller. If you can't, imagine that in a parking lot in the rain.
- Trunk fit. Measure your trunk's opening and depth before you go, and compare against the folded dimensions. A stroller that fits the cargo space but not through the opening still doesn't fit.
- Handlebar height. If one parent is 5'2" and the other is 6'3", you want an adjustable telescoping bar. Tall parents kick fixed rear axles on some models — walk a full lap in the store.
- Push it one-handed over a threshold. A good stroller tracks straight with one hand; a cheap one crabs sideways.
- Wheel type. Foam-filled rubber never goes flat and handles most surfaces; air tires ride softest but can puncture; hard plastic is fine only for smooth floors and short distances.
When a $300 stroller beats a $1,200 one
Honestly, often. If the stroller's job is car-to-store-and-back, a well-made $300 mid-range model does everything the flagship does, minus some fabric niceties. The premium price buys durability over thousands of miles, better resale (see what used strollers sell for), and expandability. If you won't use those, don't pay for them. The worst outcome isn't a cheap stroller — it's an expensive one that doesn't fit your trunk, gets left home, and a $180 umbrella stroller ends up doing all the work anyway.
Thinking about kid #2 already?
Some single strollers convert to doubles with add-on seats — the UPPAbaby Vista and the Bugaboo Donkey are the best-known. If a second child within a couple of years is likely, buying an expandable single now is genuinely cheaper than buying a single and then a double. If it's not likely, don't pay the expandability premium.
One last money tip: premium strollers almost never go on sale randomly — there are a few predictable windows a year. Read when to buy a stroller before you pay full price.
